March 2021 Discussion Group - Kernberg's 1997 article, Aggression, Hatred, and Social Violence could have been written last week about the current state of our society. Discussion led by Bob Kalter and Trey Thompson to explore the foundational psychoanalytic thinking underlying Kernberg's approach followed by an exploration of the dynamics contributing to aggression, hatred, and social violence that is driven by a number of factors, including social stress, paranoia, and political leaders who sought to take advantage of the crisis. There is a strong pull to splitting; hating those who disagree with us about how to solve the problems of the pandemic, racism, social inequality, etc. How are we affected by this? How can be help our patients deal with it?
